Mainers are among the best drivers in the country, according to a new study.

Maine ranks sixth among states in the survey by the website carinsurancecomparison.com. The report compiled statistics from several sources including National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the National Motorists Association and Mothers Against Drink Driving.

Northern New England states fared well in the report, which ranked Vermonters the best drivers in the country, and New Hamsphire the third best. The worst drivers in the country live in Louisiana, with South Carolina, Mississippi, Texas and Alabama rounding out the bottom 5.

The report gave each state a ranking in five categories:

  • Fatalities Rate per 100 Million Vehicle Miles Traveled
  • Failure to Obey (Traffic Signals + Seat Belts)
  • Drunk Driving
  • Tickets
  • Careless Driving

Perhaps contributing to Mainers' cautiousness on the roads is the fact that they're more likely to get a ticket here than almost anywhere else in the nation. Maine ranked fourth in that category.
