Maine Police To Step Up Enforcement Of Traffic Laws During Memorial Day Weekend

Additional state troopers will be deployed during Memorial Day weekend to crackdown on drunk, distracted and aggressive drivers.

“Memorial Day weekend sets the tone for the rest of the summer driving season and the State Police goal is to make is a safe one," Col. Robert Williams, chief of the Maine State Police, said in a Wednesday press release. "Troopers will continue their highway safety efforts to reduce fatalities and injuries from crashes throughout the summer.”

Williams said a state police plane will be deployed to help officers crackdown on unsafe driving. Troopers on the ground will focus their efforts on Interstate 95 and several secondary roads.

State troopers are also taking part in the “Click It Or Ticket” campaign, a nationwide effort to enforce seat belt laws. Other Maine police agencies participating in the two-week campaign that began on May 22 include the local police departments in Bangor, Bucksport, Caribou, Fort Kent, Houlton, Lincoln, Old Town, Orono and Presque Isle.

There have been 46 fatalities on Maine roads in 2017, compared to 48 deaths this time a year ago. There were no traffic-related deaths over the past two Memorial Day weekends in Maine.
