It's Fire Prevention Week, and your local fire department is reminding you of these simple safety tips/.:

Be sure that your smoke detectors are working and have adequate batteries.  You should replace the batteries twice a year.

Develop a family escape plan and then practice it.  Have a meeting place outdoors.  When an indoor fire happens, get out and stay out!

Have your heating equipment serviced once a year.

Most fires begin in the kitchen, so keep a fire extinguisher handy.

Some fire departments will be holding an Open House this week as part of Fire Prevention Week, including the Orrington Fire Department, at 14 Johnson Mill Road.  Everyone is welcome and just some of the attractions include, "The SeatBelt Convincer", a hose spray, kitchen fire safety, and of course the fire trucks!  So bring the kids on by!  Hours are 11am until 2pm.

And the Bangor Fire Department will hold one at the Department's Central Fire Station on Saturday between 10am and 1pm.  Tour the fire trucks and ambulances, children's games and door prizes, including a ride to school for one lucky Bangor student.  For more information call 992-4714.

By the way, Fire Prevention Week was started in remembrance of the great Chicago fire of 1871, that killed 250 people and then left 100,000 people homeless. 17,400 structures were destroyed over a total of 250 acres within the city.
