Friday evening, members of the Hancock County Sheriff's Department and Ellsworth Police Department conducted impaired driver checkpoints, this after clocking 81 drivers going faster than 70 on Route 1A Friday afternoon.

Despite the fact that this was widely publicized on Facebook, and on the WDEA website among other places, one person was charged with Operating Under the Influence, and one person was charged with Operating After Suspension. A total of 720 operators were contacted, and four were asked to undergo field sobriety checkpoints.

Funding for the speed enforcement and impaired driver checkpoints was provided by the Bureau of Highway Safety.
