Heavy Rain, Damaging Winds Expected In Maine Tonight

Parts of Maine are expected to see severe weather tonight, including torrential downpours and damaging winds.

Thursday evening, the National weather Service in Caribou issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Piscataquis, Aroostook, Penobscot and Somerset counties.

The agency said the storms could include 60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail. Forecasters said the gusts could be strong enough to damage homes and trees.

Torrential rainfall may lead to flash flooding, according to the weather service. Motorists are reminded to never drive on a flooded roadway.

"Everybody will be under the gun for showers and thundershowers, but especially northern and western parts of the state away from the influence of the ocean will be under the gun for the heavier thunderstorms this evening," said WABI TV5 meteorologist Chris Ewing.

Ewing said the storms should taper off after midnight, and it will likely remain muggy with lows in the 60s to around 70.
