Former Trojan Heather Littlefield Finishes 16th

In our quest to spotlight former MDI Trojans and Ellsworth Eagles, we turn to Heather Littlefield, who grew up in Bar Harbor and attended Connors-Emerson and MDI High School. She now attends NESCOM and interned at Townsquare Media Bangor this past summer.

Littlefield is the Co-Driver for Twisted Nutz Motorsports and  returned this week from the Empire State Performance Rally in New York, after placing 4^th in class. The event included 18 stages, totaling over 100 stage miles and 200 transit miles. Littlefield and her driver, Jeff Carl of Middlebury, PA, raced in a 1981 Mazda Rx-7 with a 12a rotary motor. Their final results were 16^th overall out of 33 cars, 4^th in Open 2WD Heavy class of the 6 cars and 8^th in two wheel drive class out of the 16 cars.

“Our goal of the event was to finish. The DNF (do not finish) factor for us was extremely high because we only had one spare wheel and hardly any spare parts for the Mazda. My job as the co-driver was to ensure we didn’t break anything while going as fast as we could,” Littlefield said at the awards ceremony in Narrowsburg, NY.

The team ran Day 1 smoothly without encountering many issues. On Day 2, Littlefield's speakers in her helmet quit working so she could not hear Carl, but Carl could hear her as the intercom still worked. Towards the end of the day, during Stage 16, they lost their muffler which made it very difficult for Carl to hear the notes that Littlefield was calling. Carl would let off the gas long enough to hear Littlefield call the notes he needed to hear. The last stage the team encountered their first flat. Littlefield instructed Carl that they had 4 miles to go until finish and so Carl put on his hazard lights and pressed on through the stage as fast but slow as he could go to get to the finish. After finishing the stage, Carl and Littlefield changed out the tire and transited to the final finish at headquarters.
