Update – Man Ambushed Former Lover at Door in Westbrook Murder-Suicide

The autopsies of the bodies of two men found dead in a Westbrook apartment over the weekend confirmed it as a murder-suicide. Police say it appears one man ambushed the other when he opened the door to his apartment.

State Police say the bodies of Matthew Rairdon, 22, of Westbrook and Patrick Milliner, 30, of South Portland were found on Saturday by Rairdon's roomate. The Medical Examiner's office says Rairdon died of gunshot wounds to the head and chest, while Milliner died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police say the shooting likely took place early Saturday morning, just after midnight, as Rairdon was returning home from work. Both bodies were found inside the entryway to Rairdon's apartment and police say it appears that Milliner, who was dressed in black clothing, ambushed the other man when he opened the door.

Rairdon was a nurse at Mercy Hospital, and Milliner was an correctional guard at the Maine Correctional Facility in Windham. Milliner was attending the correctional guard training program at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy and purchased the .40 caliber Glock handgun on Friday at Cabela's.

Police say the two men are former lovers whose relationship recently ended. Because of the men’s prior relationship, Rairdon's death will be classified as a domestic violence homicide.

Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland said in a press release that Milliner left a long rambling post on Facebook. A written note from Milliner was also found in the apartment.

Investigators will continue to interview friends and family members of the men, police officers who responded to the call, and employees of Cabela's.
