According to a tweet from spokesman Jim McGrath, former first lady Barbara Bush has died. She was 92.

The spokesman for former President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush released a statement Tuesday evening about her passing.

The former first lady often spent summers with her husband at the family home in Kennebunkport. The Maine Medical Center's children's hospital is also named after her.

According to WGME, Barbara Bush may have "kept a lower profile" in recent years, but she and the former president continued to be active members of the Kennebunkport community.

"Standing beside her husband, Mrs. Bush epitomized the can-do spirit of America’s 'Greatest Generation' serving as a tireless advocate for universal literacy, children’s health, and other important causes," the University of New England stated in a press release.

In a tweet from the George W. Bush Presidential Center, a statement from former President George W. Bush was released about his mother:

"My dear mother has passed on at age 92. Laura, Barbara, Jenna and I are sad, but our souls are settled because we know hers was. Barbara Bush was a fabulous first lady and a woman unlike any other who brought levity, love, and literacy to millions. To us, she was so much more. Mom kept us on our toes and kept us laughing until the end. I'm a lucky man that Barbara Bush was my mother. Our family will miss her dearly, and we thank you all for your prayers and good wishes."

Maine's and New Hampshire's governors and state senators expressed their condolences as well.
