Family of Lost Hiker Offer $15,000 Reward for Information

The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife announced today that George Largay, husband of lost hiker Geraldine Largay, and his family are offering a $15,000 reward for information leading to Geraldine's whereabouts. Mrs. Largay disappeared while hiking the Appalachian Trail in July.

Geraldine, or "Gerry" as she's known to family and friends, began hiking the Appalachian Trail on April 23rd, 2013 in Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. Her destination was Baxter State Park in Maine. Her husband kept track of her progress and met her at several pre-determined stops to restock her supplies.

On Sunday, July 21st, Geraldine left her husband at the Route 4 AT crossing in Sandy River Plantation near the town of Rangeley and continued her journey. Later that day she texted George and told him she was on the top of Saddleback Mountain. She told him her intent was to stay the night at the Poplar Ridge Lean-to in Redington TWP Sunday night, and a subsequent hiker interview confirmed that she did stay there.

She texted her husband the next morning, which was a Monday, that she was headed north and planned to stay at the Spaulding Mountain Lean-to. She then intended to meet up with her husband on Tuesday in Wyman Township but Geraldine never made it.

The Warden's Service was notified and began searching for the 66-year-old Tennessee woman, but the search was scaled back in August. So far, there's no sign of her, not even a piece of clothing or hiking accessories. The current plan is to wait for the leaves to fall off the trees and then do an aerial search of areas that are too rugged to search on foot.

Geraldine Largay is 5'5" tall and weighs 115 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes and was last seen wearing a reddish colored pullover shirt, tan shorts, a blue hat, and a black-and-green backpack. Her trail name is "inchworm."

The Maine Warden's Service and the Largay family are seeking any information that could be helpful, especially in the time frame of July 21st to the 23rd. Informants can remain anonymous.
