Ellsworth Girls Win Prelim 57-44
The Ellsworth Girls' Basketball Team defeated Mattanawcook Academy 57-44 in a Class B North Prelim game at Katsiaficas Gymnasium on Tuesday, February 9th to advance to the Cross Insurance Center on Saturday morning, February 12th at 10:35 AM. The Ellsworth Girls will play in the same session as the Ellsworth Boys who play at 9:05 AM
It looked a little bleak for Ellsworth on Monday, as Kate Whitney had the flu, and Madison Card had a sprained ankle. But on Tuesday, Card played with her ankle taped, and Whitney gutted out valuable minutes while still recovering. Ellsworth received valuable minutes from all players and a season high 21 points from Sammy Mason to advance to the Quarterfinals.
Ellsworth and Mattanawcook Academy were tied 16-16 at the end of the 1st Quarter. For Ellsworth, Mason had 6 points, Caitlin Bean and Madison Card each had 4 points and Hannah Sargent had 2 points. For Mattanawcook Academy Courtney Gordon, Cheyanne Libby and Katie Tolman each had 5 points with Tolman and Gordon having 3 pointers. Tressa Libby had 1 point.
In the 2nd Quarter, Ellsworth outscored Mattanawcook Academy 9-7 to take a 25-23 lead. Card, Mason, Callie Hammer and Kate Whitney each had 2 points while Bean had 1 point for the Eagles. For the Lynz, Camryn Lyons had a 3-pointer while Cheyanne Libby and Kim Voisine each had 2 points.
Ellsworth took control of the game in the 3rd Quarter outscoring the Lynx 17-9 to take a 42-32 lead. Mason had 7 points, Bean and Card had 4 points and Katelynn Bagley each had 2 points for the Eagles. For Mattanawcook Academy Lyons had 4 points, Libby had 3 points and Gordon had 2 points.
In the 4th Quarter Mason had 6 points, Breann Cummings had 4 points, Bean had 3 points and Bagley had 2 points for the Eagles. For Mattanawcook Academy Cheyanne Libby had 7 points, Lyons had a 3-pointer and Voisine and Gordon each had 1 point.
Ellsworth was led by Sammy Mason with 21 points, Caitlin Bean had 12 points and Madison Card had 10 points. Bean and Card each had 11 rebounds. The Eagles were 5-14 from the free throw line.
Mattanawcook Academy was led by Cheyanne Libby with 17 points while Camryn Lyons had 10 points and Courtney Gordon had 8 points. The Lynx were 11-14 from the free throw line.
Ellsworth is now 12-7 while Mattanawcook Academy finishes their season with a record of 8-11.
The #5 Eagles will play #4 Winslow (15-3) on Saturday, Feburay 12th at 10:35AM in the Class B North Quarterfinals in a game that will be broadcast on AM 1370 and WDEA Internet Radio.
