Ellsworth Girls Defeat Sumner 53-52

The Ellsworth Girl's Basketball Team traveled to Sullivan to take on Class C Sumner on Thursday, January 9th and jumped out to a 20 point half time lead, but the Sumner Lady Tigers clawed their way back and Ellsworth hung on to defeat Sumner 53-52.

It was all Ellsworth early, as they led 11-2 at the end of the 1st Quarter. Caitlin Bean had 7 points for Ellsworth, including a 3-pointer, while Taylor Davis had the lone points for Sumner.

In the 2nd Quarter, Ellsworth expanded their lead to 20 points at the half, 34-14. Emily Berry scored 10 for Ellsworth, going 8-10 from the free throw line. As a whole, Ellsworth shot a sterling 11-13 from the free throw line in the 2nd Quarter. Sumner was led by Savana Turner with 4 points. Ellsworth's trapping defense was causing Sumner problems.

But, that all changed in the 3rd Quarter, as the Lady Tigers made changes in their offensive scheme, and were able to get the ball inside to Taylor Davis, who scored 10 points from within the paint. Hailee Langley scored 4 points in the quarter for Ellsworth. At the end of the 3rd Quarter, Ellsworth led 45-33.

Sumner kept charging in the 4th Quarter. Savanna Turner hit 2 3-pointers, and Kiandra Barnes also nailed a 3-pointer for Sumner. Sumner cut the lead to 1, but were unable to tie the score as Ellsworth barely hung on for the win. Ellsworth was 4-7 from the free throw line in the 4th Quarter.

Ellsworth was led by Caitlin Bean with a game high 16 points. Emily Berry had 13 and Hailee Langley had 10 points. Ellsworth was 18-26 from the free throw line. Sumner's Taylor Davis had 14 points as did Savana Turner. Jordan Merchant chipped in with 8 points. Sumner was 7-8 from the free throw line.

With the victory, Ellsworth improved to 4-6 and plays host to Calais Saturday night, January 11th at 7:30 PM. Sumner fell to 3-3 and next plays at Narraguagus in a make up game that was postponed from January 3rd.
