Ellsworth Boys 42 Sumner 30
The Ellsworth Boy's Basketball team defeated Sumner 42-30 on Friday night, January 9th, in a game that always seemed closer than the score indicated.
Sumner took a 5-3 lead at the end of the 1st Quarter, as both teams had difficulty putting the ball in the basket. Sumner was led by Jordan Bernier who scored 4 points, including going 2-4 from the free throw line. Bruce St. Peter scored Ellsworth's 3 points, as he sank a basket and went 1-4 from the free throw line.
In the 2nd Quarter, the Eagles came out flying, scoring 14 straight points in 2:59 before Sam Smith scored for Sumner. With 4:11 left in the half, Ellsworth led 17-7 and Ellsworth took a 23-11 lead at the half. Nick Bagley scored 8 points for Ellsworth, including 2 3-pointers, Derek Look had 4 points and Alex Braley, Mitchell Domagala, Bryce Harmon and Mitchell Domagala each had 2 points. Sam Smith and Isaac Christensen each had 3 points for Sumner.
Ellsworth led 32-22 at the end of the 3rd Quarter. Bagley scored 5 more points for Ellsworth, including another 3-pointer and Look added another 3 points. For the Sumner Tigers, Smith had 4 points, Max Eklund had a 3-pointer and Alex O'Hara and Christensen each had 2 points.
In the 4th Quarter, with 6:05 left, Sumner had cut Ellsworth's lead to 4 points 32-28, and the lead was shaky. But Derek Look scored to give Ellsworth a 34-28, and that would be the closest that Sumner would get for the rest of the evening. Joey Lamoureaux sank a 3-pointer and Smith had 3 points for the Tigers. Bruce St. Peter scored 4 points for Ellsworth, Bagley went 3-4 from the free throw line and Look had 2 points for Ellsworth.
Ellsworth was led by Nick Bagley with 16 points, and Derek Look had 9 points. Ellsworth went 11-22 from the free throw line.
Sumner was led by Sam Smith with 10 points while Isaac Christensen had 7 points. Suimner went 11-19 from the free throw line.
Ellsworth is now 7-2 and next play at Old Town on Tuesday January 13th at 7 PM. Sumner is now 3-6 and play host to George Steven's Academy on Monday, January 12th at 7 PM.
