It's been a tough week for the Ellsworth Eagles Baseball team, as they had to play 5 games in the week, and with the rules in place to protect pitcher's arms, the Ellsworth pitching staff has been taxed. The Eagles traveled to East Machias on Friday, May 23rd, to take on Washington Academy, and lost 6-3.

Washington Academy scored first in the bottom of the 1st inning, to take a 2-0 lead. Kyle Taylor singled to start off the inning and advanced when Gage Feeney reached base on an error on the Ellsworth 2nd baseman. Taylor and Feeney both advanced a base when Fred Maclean grounded out to 1st base. Colin Pineo's single scored Taylor and Feeney scored when Cameron Varney grounded out to 2nd base.

Washington Academy scored 2 more runs in the bottom of the 4th inning. Ethan Sawyer started off the inning with a double, and Jordan Drouin singled, advancing Sawyer to 3rd base. Washington Academy pulled off a double steal, as Sawyer scored and Drouin went to 2nd base. Spencer Johnson singled and Drouin scored on an error by Ellsworth's 3rd baseman. At the end of 4 innings Washington Academy was up 4-0.

Ellsworth got 1 run back in the top of the 5th inning. Conor Maguire singled, stole 2nd base and then scored on an error by the Washington Academy 3rd baseman.

Washington Academy got the run back in the bottom of the 5th inning. Fred Maclean walked and advanced to 2nd base on Colin Pineo's single. Maclean advanced to 3rd when Varney hit into a double play, and then scored on Jared Taylor's single.

In the bottom of the 6th inning, Washington Academy scored it's final run of the game. Jordin Drouin walked and advanced to 2nd base on a fielder's choice, and scored on a single by Gage Feeney.

In the top of the 7th inning, Ellsworth scored 2 runs. Steven Mahon reached on an error by the Washington Academy shortstop. Conor Maguire singled for his third hit of the game, and both Mahon and Maguire scored when Brandon Braley tripled. That made the score 6-3, but then Kyle Taylor came in for Washington Academy to pitch, relieving Ethan Sawyer, and retired the final three Ellsworth batters.

Ellsworth is now 4-8 on the season. They are scheduled to play three games next week, at Bucksport Tuesday May 27th at 4:30, at Hermon on Thursday May 29th at 4:30 and then home on Saturday, May 31st against Foxcroft Academy at 12 Noon. Washington Academy is 8-4, and is scheduled to play their final 4 games next week. The host Narraguagus Tuesday, May 27th at 4 PM,  Orono, Wednesday May 28th at 4:30, Calais, Friday May 30th at 4 PM and then Sumner, Saturday May 31 at 12 noon in their final game of the season, which will also be senior day.
