Officials have released more details on a 3-vehicle accident in Ellsworth Thursday that sent five people to the hospital and closed Route 1-A for a time.

According to the BDN, the crash that happened shortly before 3 p.m. near Moto Car started when a southbound black Ford sedan driven by Jonathan Rigg, age 28 of Harrington, crossed the center line and sideswiped a tractor trailer driven by 64-year-old Roderick Lander of Guilford. The Ford then ricocheted off the truck and struck a car, driven by 54-year-old Holly Knowles of Brewer, head-on.

Police Chief Pete Bickmore told the paper that at least one of the four passengers in Rigg's vehicle was ejected. There were three children in the car, ages 4, 8, and 10, and police believed one of them may also have been ejected.

All five of the people in the black sedan were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center. Rigg suffered a fracture. The BDN says it believes the 4-year-old had a serious head injury and the 8-year-old had liver lacerations.

Knowles had minor injuries and was treated at the scene, while Lander wasn't hurt. Police say it's not clear, at this point, why the sedan crossed the center line.
