The Ellsworth Eagles' Softball Team defeated Gardiner 5-3 in a Class B Prelim Game that was broadcast here on AM 1370 and WDEA Internet Radio on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles now 12-5 will travel to Winslow on Thursday at 4 PM to play the #3 seeded Winslow Black Raiders who are 15-1 on the season.

After Ellsworth's Kate Whitney struck out the side in the top of the 1st inning, Ellsworth came to bat and Leah Stevens started the bottom of the 1st inning with a single. She stole 2nd base and then advanced to 3rd on Hannah Sargent's ground out to 2nd and then scored on Caitlin Bean's ground out to short. At the end of the 1st inning Ellsworth led 1-0.

In the top of the 3rd inning Gardiner tied the game. Megan Meehan reached on an error and then was sacrificed to 3rd on a bunt by Sydney Bartunel. Meehan scored on Jillian Bisson's single.

In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Ellsworth scored 3 runs to take a 4-1 lead. Sargent started the inning off with a single and Bean walked. Callie Hammer doubled, scoring Sargent. Breann Cummings singled scoring Bean and Katelyn Bagley singled scoring Hammer.

Ellsworth added an insurance run in the 4th inning. With 2 out, Bean singled and Hammer singled and on an error Bean scored.

In the top of the 5th inning, Brooke Somes was hit by a pitch and Meehan singled. Both advanced on a passed ball. With runners on 3nd and 3rd, Kate Whitney struck out Sydney Bartunek and Jillian Bisson, but Bri Brochu doubled, scoring Some and Meehan. Whitney then struck out Mallory Bailey to end the inning.

In the bottom of the 5th, Ellsworth threatened but Leah Stevens was thrown out at the plate.

Ellsworth ended up with 10 hits. Leah Stevens had 2 singles, Hannah Sargent had a single, Caitlin Bean had 2 singles, Callie Hammer had 2 singles and a double, and Breann Cummings had a single.

Kate Whitney ended up with 13 strikeouts. She struck out the side in the 1st and 5th innings and had 2 strikeouts in the 3rd and 4th innings. She struck out Logan Granholm to end the game.
