How many volunteers does it take to run a major medical facility?

Martha Wildman, Director of Volunteer Services with Eastern Maine Medical Center, says as many as 300 volunteers are working at different times of the day in various parts of the hospital complex. 

Wildman says they always need new volunteers to keep things running well and they try to match the volunteer with their area of interest inside the hospital.

Wildman says EMMC trains all volunteers and require background checks, health screens, and references.

Because of the investment the hospital makes in its volunteers, EMMC asks volunteers to give a 6-month to year-long commitment, or 100 hours of service. 

You do have to be 18 to volunteer at Eastern Maine Medical Center.
