A Bangor man was arrested this week, accused of assaulting a 6-month-old child. The specifics of the case were revealed yesterday during Morgan Gunnell's first court appearance.

According to court documents, the investigation began when Gunnell called 911 on May 7th to report that his infant son was unresponsive. The child was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center where doctors discovered he had bruising on the brain.

Police arrested Gunnell on Tuesday and charged him with aggravated assault and domestic violence assault on a child under the age of six. He's been ordered held on $20,000 bail. Gunnell has said, through his court-appointed lawyer, that the child suffered a seizure and he did not cause the injuries.

The child was still in the hospital as of Wednesday, but is expected to be released soon.
