Bangor's City Manager Catherine M. Conlow announced today the appointment of Mark J. Hathaway of Bangor, ME., as Chief of the Bangor Police Department, subject to the confirmation of the Bangor City Council at its regular meeting on May 13th. Chief Hathaway was selected from a field of thirty eight applicants, four of whom recently interviewed for the position.

Chief Hathaway has served in a variety of communities during his career including the town of Veazie and the cities of Biddeford and Bangor.  Mark began his career with Bangor in 1987 and currently serves as Interim Deputy Chief of Police. During his tenure with the Department, he has held the positions of Lieutenant- Support Services Division; Lieutenant - Patrol Division; Sergeant-Criminal Investigation Division; Detective- Criminal Investigation Division; and Patrol Officer.  He has also served as Youth Services Supervisor and is currently the Supervisor of the Department’s Bomb Squad. Mark is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, and holds Professional Certifications in a number of areas including Hostage Negotiation, Accident Reconstruction, Emergency Medical Dispatch, Homicide Investigation, and Bomb Technician.

According to City Manager Conlow, “Mark possesses the broad knowledge, experience, and professionalism the City was searching for to lead the Department. His extensive career in Bangor positions him well to build on the Department’s strengths and to move the Department forward. Those involved with the interview process were impressed with his experience, passion, and accomplishments and those who know and have worked with Mark have been very supportive of his candidacy”.

In commenting on his appointment, Chief Hathaway said “I am truly honored to have been offered the opportunity to serve as Bangor’s 29th police chief.  The Department has a strong and proud tradition of providing residents and businesses with outstanding police services.  I am looking forward to working with the Department, City Manager and City Council and building upon the efforts of those before me.  I am excited about this opportunity and will work very hard to ensure that the Department is ready to accept the challenges ahead”.

Chief Hathaway is scheduled to formally assume his position on May 14th. The Chief’s position has been filled on a temporary basis by former Deputy Chief Peter Arno. He succeeded Chief Ron Gastia who retired in September 2012.
