After playing their first two games on the road, the University of Maine team football played their home opener and beat Rhode Island 27-17 to start the conference schedule.The Black Hole defense held the Rams in check most of the game by holding them to just 232 yards of total offense. Maine kept steady pressure which resulted in 6 quarterback sacks for 55 yards. Sherrod Baltimore led the secondary with 2 interceptions.

Nigel Beckford had his best game of the season with 93 yards rushing on 17 carries and 2 touchdowns. Quarterback Dan Collins threw for 211 yards, a touchdown pass to Micah Wright and no interceptions.

Despite the win coach Jack Cosgrove was not happy with teams 14 penalties for 118 yards. Two touchdowns and an interception were taken away form the Bears because of those penalties.

Maine goes back on the road next week for a game against Richmond.
