The Bangor City Council on Monday approved a $1,000 grant for a floating sculpture planned for Kenduskeag Stream this summer.

The 8-1 vote came after some sometimes vulgar controversy over the coral-colored sculpture, which many in social media have compared to a woman's reproductive organs. The artist, Anna Helper of Eastport, told the Bangor Daily News she may consider changes to the design.

Ben Sprague was the only dissenting vote. He said the expenditure could send the wrong message to Augusta as the city fights for more revenue sharing money.

The display is set to coincide with the Helper's exhibit at the University of Maine Museum of Art, which sits on the banks of the Kenduskeag in Downtown Bangor.
