Don't call it a retirement, call it a well earned breather! After 30 years at The Ellsworth American, Hugh Bowden who was the managing editor, executive editor, chief editorial writer, sports editor, reporter and photographer will be stepping back to focus solely on editorials and The American's editorial page.

Bowden, in an article written by Stpehen Fay at The Ellsworth American was quoted as saying

"My three decades at The American have flown by. That's what happens when you love the job that you do and the people with whom you do it. Those feelings haven't changed. But aging and health issues sometimes force one to reorder his priorities, and while I am healthy, I want some increased time with my family and friends and the opportunity to take on some other activities that I enjoy doing. Under this new arrangement, I'll still be able to contribute to the newspaper I love and maintain my association with my colleagues, so it's the best of both worlds."

On a personal note, Hugh was always extremely gracious to me, and always shared information and was helpful to me, especially when I first started broadcasting the basketball games 8 years ago!

Taylor Vortherms who joined The American in 2013 after graduating from the Missouri School of Journalism will take Hugh's place as sport's editor.

Everyone is invited to Ellsworth High School's cafeteria on Thursday, December 4th from 6 to 8 PM for an informal reception in Hugh Bowden's honor! Hors d'oeuvres and refreshments will be served.
