State Police say speed and alcohol were the causes of a two-vehicle crash in August that killed three people. The driver crossed the center line, across the passing lane, and collided with a pickup traveling in the opposite direction.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said in a press release that Richard Olson's blood alcohol concentration was 0.14 and that his SUV was traveling 76 miles per hour in a 55 mile an hour zone when it crossed the center line on Route 1A and slammed into a pickup truck driven by Phillip Carter. Both men were killed, as well as Roxanne Papken, who was a passenger in Carter's truck.

Trooper Gregory Roy, who investigated the accident, says Olson spent much of the day at the Hollywood Casino in Bangor and had just left the Lucerne Inn, which is a short distance from the crash site. A witness reported seeing Olson drink half of a martini at the Inn. There's no indication where he may have consumed the additional alcohol it would have taken for his blood alcohol level to reach that point. The legal limit is .08.

Olson, who was 85 years old, was a summer resident of Ellsworth who lived the rest of the year in Des Moines, Iowa, where he once served as mayor. Both Carter and Papken were residents of Bangor who worked at the downtown pub and eatery, Paddy Murphy's.
