1 in every 8 women will be impacted by breast cancer in her lifetime and a grant from the Maine Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation will help women in Hancock and Washington counties receive breast health screenings.

A collaborative effort between Maine Coast Memorial Hospital and the Beth C. Wright Cancer Resource Center in Ellsworth has received a grant of thirty-nine thousand dollars which will be used to assist 112 under-insured and un-insured women within central Hancock County and western Washington County to receive free breast cancer screenings.

“Over the years Maine Coast Memorial Hospital has offered hundreds of free screening mammograms, but the demand had started to outpace our ability to raise funds for the tests.  We’re very happy that we were able to secure this grant, and offer testing to more women in need,” says Jack Frost, Executive Director of the Maine Coast Healthcare Foundation.

This project is a partnership with the Beth C. Wright Center and approximately 15% of the grant award will be utilized by the Beth C. Wright Center to assist with patient transportation, education, and health programs.

If you or someone you know is need of a mammogram and could benefit from this program, please call 207-664-5337 to find out more.  A physician’s order is required to schedule a screening mammogram.
